2018 Caldecott Award Winning Books

This year, several literary favorites won awards for their illustrations and contributions to children’s literature. These awards are given by the Association for Library Service to Children, of the American Library Association. Review the awarded books below for possible new additions to your center or classroom’s library collection.

Caldecott Medal

“Wolf in the Snow”

This book was written and illustrated by Matthew Cordell and is the story of a girl and a wolf cub. This story has almost no words at all, and will be most enjoyed by children who are 4 years and older.

Caldecott Honor Books

“Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut”

Written by Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Gordon C. James, this story tells about the power and the joy of a fresh haircut. Readers as young as 3 will be able to follow and enjoy, while children 5 and up will be able to understand and connect with the story’s language and message.

“Big Cat, Little Cat”

A story of friendship, written and illustrated by Elisha Cooper, this is the perfect read for children 3 years and older to introduce concepts about loss and life cycles of pets.

“A Different Pond”

This story is written by Bao Phi illustrated by Thi Bui and tells the story of a father-son relationship in a family of Vietnamese refugees. This book will be enjoyed by children 6 years and older.
