Cultural sensitivity in early childhood classrooms is an important part of creating safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for the children in our care. When children and their families feel that they are welcomed and celebrated in the early learning environment, it creates a sense of belonging and contributes to building a sense of community in your program.
This free video resource from the California Department of Education, in partnership with WestEd, illustrates how educators and care providers can invite families to share their language and cultural experiences to integrate them into the ECE classroom curriculum.
The video also shares examples of strategies educators can incorporate into their curriculum, such as:
- collaborating to create an environment that represents families with books in different languages and culturally-relevant music
- providing utensils/food/dolls in dramatic play that celebrate diversity
