PITC Webinar Series for CA Educators: Supporting Multilingual Development

Apr 22, 2025    |   Upcoming Webinars

The California Department of Social Services, in partnership with WestEd’s Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC), will be hosting an upcoming webinar series focused on supporting multilingual development.

This no–cost webinar series will explore PITC’s Approach to Language Development, Communication, and Culture, for Infants and Toddlers in Group Care Settings.

Join PITC faculty Anne-Marie Wiese and Elizabeth Crocker as they share their learning from more than 30 years of providing services to children and families in multilingual child care settings, delivering training, and developing resources to support infant care educators in their understanding of multilingual language development for young children.

This free webinar series builds a connection among the practices that support language development for children who are learning one or more languages. Participants will explore practical strategies to support language development and deepen partnerships with families to learn about their goals for their child’s language development.

Part 1: Language Development, Communication, and Culture

Date & Time: Wednesday, May 7, 6:30 – 7:30 PM PT

The first webinar covers language development in infants and toddlers, and explores opportunities to support early language development. Infants and toddlers are active learners of language, and benefit when caregivers facilitate language development by being responsive to the way they use verbal and non–verbal communication.

Part 2: Multilingual Development

Date & Time: Wednesday, May 14,  6:30 – 7:30 PM PT

The second webinar in the series explores the stages of multilingualism and describes strategies to support language development in partnership with families. With the primary language as the foundation, young children are capable of learning more than one language. Part 2 explores strategies that child care settings can use to  support continued development in the child’s home language, even when the caregivers do not share that language, through effective partnerships with families.
