On Monday, October 11th, we celebrated Indigenous People’s day to honor the history and culture of Native Americans in the United States. This celebration is a great opportunity to learn more about the Ramaytush (pronounced ra-MY-toosh) Ohlone, the first people to live in the San Francisco Peninsula. The Ramaytush Ohlone lived on the peninsula for thousands of years, and still continue to live here today. As a result of devastating policies and practices of European expansion, the Ramaytush Ohlone lost the vast majority of their population as well as their land.
Today, Ohlone refers to communities of native people who lived throughout the Bay Area along the coast, along the bay, and inland toward the central valley. Contemporary members of the tribes continue to research, preserve, and share their history and culture.
