Language/Literacy Tips & Developmental Info from CA Department of Education

A toddler boy in a blue striped shirt sits on a couch with feet up, engaged in a picture book—demonstrating early literacy exploration.

The California Department of Education recently released a free, printable booklet that focuses on language and literacy development as it relates to the Preschool/ Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) and Common Core state standards.

This resource includes the knowledge and skills children develop in early childhood, with a focus on how those skills support the transition between preschool and early elementary school. The booklet provides suggestions for educators, including tips for using playful, inquiry-based teaching practices to engage children in developmentally appropriate, culturally-sustaining language and literacy experiences.

This printable booklet is full of ideas and information. It includes…

  • Tips for educators to build on children’s cultural and linguistic experiences to promote language & literacy development
  • Strategies for educators to help little ones express their thoughts through language (including spoken language, signed language, gesture, writing, and more)
  • Information about language and literacy development during early childhood and early elementary school.

Find the free, printable resource here.
