Helping Children Cope with Frightening News Events: Resources from NAEYC

Sep 16, 2025    |   Early Childhood Mental Health
A young boy, with a worried expression, receives a comforting hug from his caregiver.

While we try our best to protect little ones from news about disturbing events, children can be exposed to media coverage of tragedies and violence. Young children can feel frightened or anxious when they hear about events they don’t understand, especially when those events result in harm to others.

NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) has collected a list of online resources to help parents, educators, and caregivers talk with young children about disturbing news events and tragedies. In addition to informing your response to children’s questions and concerns, these resources can also be passed on to families with questions about how to have these conversations with their little ones.

Find the full list of resources on the NAEYC website.
