Supporting Dual Language Learners: A Free, Online Course with Cox Campus

Close to 30% of children under 8 years in the US speak a language other than English at home. This course, from Cox Campus, supports teachers of preschool DLLs to understand development in two languages and the implications for classroom practices. Following an ecosystem approach, the course presents practices and resources teachers can put in place right away to support brain construction in emergent bilinguals and ensure DLLs have a preschool experience that responds to their needs and prepares them for kindergarten and beyond.

In this course, you’ll learn…

  • How dual language learners develop, the benefits of bilinguals, and the role of the first language in DLLs’ development.

  • An ecosystem approach to teaching DLLs and the six essential elements that contribute to a learning environment where DLLs thrive.

  • How to design culturally and linguistically responsive learning environments for dual language learners.

  • Teaching practices that specifically support DLLs’ development and build their foundation in language and literacy.

This course is for…

  • Teachers of preschool and pre-k dual language learners.

  • Program leaders and site directors serving young preschool and pre-k dual language learners and their families.

  • Other professionals (monolingual and bilingual) serving young preschool and pre-k dual language learners.
