Free Resource: Creating Equitable ECE Environments for Young Boys of Color

Jun 29, 2023    |   Celebrating Diversity

The California Department of Education Early Education Division (EED) recently released a new online publication: Creating Equitable Early Learning Environments for Young Boys of Color.

The book was written for child care and early education providers and program leaders who seek to improve race equity within their programs and to disrupt the exclusionary disciplinary practices (suspensions, expulsions, and pushouts) that disproportionately impact young boys of color.

Drawing on new and relevant research, the authors discuss the rates of exclusionary discipline practices in early childhood and the underlying reasons for these patterns – including different forms of oppression with a focus on structural racism and implicit bias.

Creating Equitable Early Learning Environments for Young Boys of Color is part of a series on curriculum planning for programs serving young children. The other publications in the series include companion online learning modules that are available on the California Early Childhood Online (CECO) website. Early learning professionals are invited to create an account to explore the free modules.
