Position Summary:

The Senior Counselor for Extended Day & Camps is responsible for providing a safe, joyful and developmentally appropriate program for all participants and their families. They will work closely with the Director of Extended Day & Camps to facilitate and lead student experiences designed to fulfill each child’s potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Employees must be able to perform the Essential Functions of the Job, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Be present on campus for all functions and tasks.
  • Implement, facilitate and contribute to developmentally and culturally appropriate programs for elementary school aged children, infused with joy.
  • Implement daily lesson and activity plans, and lead and oversee age appropriate projects
  • Prepare and organize project materials in collaboration with the Director and Counselor staff
  • Facilitate connection time with assigned participants through group activities, games, and more
  • Ensure that the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of children in the program are met and maintained
  • Establish routines and provide positive guidance for all program participants, inclusive of a range of skills, abilities and/or age
  • Participate fully and enthusiastically in all program activities, both on and off campus, during project time and active play, indoors and outdoors
  • Provide both group and individual support to children across diverse age groups, ability levels, and support needs
  • Complete all tasks in a timely manner and with good quality
  • Supervise all Extended Day and Camp program participants to ensure their health and safety at all times and locations of the program day:
    • Partner with fellow staff to implement and follow through on all student management frameworks, including discipline, restorative justice and positive reinforcement practices
    • Be familiar with and consistently implement all health, safety and emergency procedures
    • Continually assess and support participant engagement by monitoring group dynamics, as well as the needs of individual children
    • Supervise and lead participants to ensure safety at all times during group settings, such as ceremonies, all-program activities, snack and lunch
    • Assume all responsibility for program logistics and execution in the absence of the Program Director.
  • Practice clear and effective communication with all program participants, including camp and extended day participants, staff, and members of the community:
    • Maintain a collaborative, professional and positive relationship with all members of the school and Counselor staff
    • When off campus, maintain a professional and positive relationship with vendors or other members of the larger community when representing the Kids Connection program
    • Communicate clearly and consistently with fellow Counselors as well as school leadership
    • Provide feedback to counselors to support improvement of their skills and experience
  • Provide exemplary customer service to each child, family, and guardian at all times:
    • Enthusiastically greet all children and parents/guardians ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all
    • Follow all check-in/check-out procedures to ensure efficiency and accurate daily attendance
    • Communicate with families as needed about their child’s experience
  • Cover the front desk of the school as needed – responding to phone calls and visitor inquiries as they come up.
  • Support for additional Extended Day and Camps programs as well as all-school needs at the discretion of the Head of School and Extended Day & Camps Director:
    • Become a certified driver of the school van:
    • Valid driver’s license and
    • Up to date driver’s insurance
    • Clean driving record

Other Functions of the Job:

  • Set up and clean up small group activities and lessons
  • Review curriculum in advance to prepare to facilitate lessons
  • Ensure equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times
  • Organize and distribute snacks and lunch, ensuring all food areas are hygienic and cleaned before and after food distribution.
  • Provide first aid to program participants as needed
  • Maintain accident and incident reports
  • Attend all staff meetings and training as scheduled by the Director of Extended Day and Camps
  • Cleaning the bathrooms, including toilets, sinks and floors, if needed for messes that occur during the school day
  • Clean staff kitchen after use
  • Refrain from using personal cell phone and other devices while on duty

Schedule:

  • The schedule for this position is part time, hourly through the regular school year and can be full time during the summer months.
  • Extended Day Program Hours: Monday-Friday – 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Counselor Staff Hours: up to 6.5 hour shift within program hours (maximum of 25 hours per week)
  • September to Early June
  • Day and Break Camps Hours: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Counselor Staff Hours: up to 8 hours per day of camp, , with a one hour unpaid lunch break
  • Dates determined by the school calendar
  • No Camp on observed federal holidays and specified school events based on academic calendar
  • Summer Camps: Monday-Friday 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Counselor Staff Hours: 7-8 hours/day, with a one hour unpaid lunch break
  • Mid June – August
  • Occasional night and/or weekend events
  • Friday Fun Nights – monthly
  • Occasional school events such as Admissions Open House; Marketing Fairs; summer events; Spring Picnic; etc.
  • For advanced absences, a minimum of 48 hours notice is required or request may not be granted
  • Applicants with more than two continuous months of availability preferred

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old by January 1st, 2025
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills
  • Pediatric CPR certification required or obtained during onboarding
  • Current Lifescan; positive licensing requirement status with government authorities.
  • High school diploma (or GED) preferred, but not required
  • College coursework in Education or Child Development preferred, but not required
  • Work experience in a school, camp, or child care preferred, but not required
  • Availability to work 5-6.5 hours shifts daily, Monday – Friday, for the duration of school year
  • Bilingual in English and another language is beneficial, but not required
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks with enthusiasm, handling changing priorities and practicing dynamic thinking including rapid decision making
  • Ability to complete all pre-program tasks, including background checks, state-mandated certifications, electronic onboarding paperwork, and online training prior to the start of programPhysical:
  • The physical demands must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Repetitive lifting and some carrying up to 60 lbs for a minimum distance of 10 feet
  • Typing, writing, reading
  • Talking, seeing, and hearing in person both nearby and at a distance, in person and on the telephone
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and controls such as those on learning toys and writing implements, classroom supplies and to operate equipment
  • Frequent sitting on the floor or in a child sized chair for the duration of a working shift.
  • Standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending over, running on a variety of surfaces and durations for the duration of a working shift.
  • Reach with hands and arms, grasp objects, push/pull file drawers of 10-50 points, twist the upper body, rotate the wrist, and use finger dexterity for writing and using the computer
  • Walk for a distance of 10 to 100 feet at a time
  • Climb stairs
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus

Work Environment:

Work is performed with the presence of children the majority of the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the employee will have to supervise all children at all times. The employee may experience smells associated with children including those who are ill.
