The Flu Vaccine For Staff: What You Need To Know

Oct 10, 2019    |   Safe & Healthy ECE Programs

Flu season can begin as early as October and last through early May. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone be vaccinated on an annual basis.

A reminder from Californians for Quality Early Learning (CQEL) recommends educating children, families, and employees about the flu, including measures to prevent the spread of the virus and contain the virus:

  • Hand wash with soap and water

  • Stay home when sick

  • Sneeze and cough into the elbow

  • Avoid touching the eyes, nose, or mouth

  • Clean and disinfect common areas and objects that may be contaminated with germs

  • If you encounter an outbreak of the flu in your center, contact the
local health department for information on outbreak management

While the flu vaccine is recommended, staff may decline it. They must do so annually. Here is a vaccine declination form (PDF).
