San Mateo County parents/caregivers are invited to an online training on the ABC model of managing challenging behaviors for children with autism and/or developmental disabilities. This training is presented by Project AFECT (Autism Family Empowerment Coaching and Training) of Stanford Medicine Children’s Health. Their goal is to support families of children recently diagnosed with autism through coaching and education.
This is a two-part workshop series. It is recommended that parents/caregivers attend both parts, if possible. Thank you to San Mateo County Family Resource Center for sharing information about this free program.
Part 1
Wednesday, August 20, 6 PM PT
Part 1 of this series helps parents understand existing behavior patterns. Participants will learn…
- How to understand existing behavior patterns using an ABC (antecedent, behavior, consequence) learning model.
- How to decrease unwanted behaviors and increase more appropriate behaviors instead.
- How to identify functions of behavior, or what the child is attempting to get by doing a specific behavior.
Register for Part 1 here.
Part 2
Wednesday, August 27, 6 PM PT
Part 2 will build on the information presented in Part 1 to help parents and caregivers create proactive plans to eliminate challenging behavior over time. Participants will learn how to use the ABC model of behavior to create behavior plans to address challenging behavior, including:
- Strategies to prevent problem behaviors from occurring in the first place.
- How to teach appropriate replacement behaviors.
- How to decrease negative behavior and encourage appropriate behavior over time.
